What’s Haunting Your Workplace Culture? A Halloween Survival Guide

The workplace is haunted… but fear not, we’re here to lead with strategy (and snacks). From meeting zombies to remote-work vampires to employees ghosting the office, today’s workplace culture can feel a little spooky. But smart leaders don’t run from monsters, they learn to tame them. Grab your pumpkin-spice latte, and let’s go monster hunting.
Meeting Zombies and How to Bring Them Back to Life
We’ve all been there, you walk out of a meeting, and your soul has left your body. You can’t remember what was decided. You can’t remember why you were there. You just know you’ve lost an hour of your life you’ll never get back.

Congratulations, you’ve just encountered a Meeting Zombie.
According to Harvard Business Review, 25% of meetings cause a “meeting hangover”. That post-meeting brain fog that kills motivation and sends productivity to the grave. When employees lose prime working hours to pointless meetings, they end up doing real work at night, which pushes them toward burnout.
But here’s the twist: meetings aren’t the villain – bad meetings are. To resurrect them, leaders need to grab the garlic and set some ground rules:
- No agenda = no meeting
- Ban multitasking – phones and laptops kills presence
- Don’t let topics become ghosts – park tangents, stay focused.
- Empower people to say no. Teach your team to ask:
- Is there an agenda?
- Are the outcomes clear?
- Do I need to be there?
- If no for any of these, decline with kindness.
Leadership truth: It’s not about fewer meetings. It’s about better ones.

Remote Work Vampires: They’re Not Sucking Productivity,They’re Saving It
For years, leaders were warned that remote work would kill productivity. Plot twist: the real productivity vampire was the commute.
A four-year study by the University of South Australia confirmed what employees already knew:
- Get 30 more minutes of sleep
- Eat healthier meals
- Experience less stress
- Avoid office politics
- And maintain (or improve) productivity
Why? Because productivity isn’t about location, it’s about autonomy.

The myth: “If I can’t see them, they’re not working.”
The reality: “When I trust them, they thrive.”
Healthy workplace culture is built on flexibility, trust and ownership, not proximity. And the most surprising part? Productivity didn’t drop. In many cases, it improved.
When remote work is voluntary, employees feel trusted and in control of their environment. They structure their day around their natural energy and focus. That’s not laziness, that’s high performance.
Leadership takeaway: Remote work isn’t the enemy of culture, rigid thinking is.
Give people flexibility, trust, and ownership, and they’ll give you results, loyalty, and energy in return.
Wicked Leadership: Even Strong Leaders Burn Out
Leaders are expected to be everything, composed, creative, productive, unshakable, even during chaos. But the stronger you are, the less people check in…..but even Elphaba needed a break.

According to the 2025 Global Leadership Study (DDI), managers face 59% higher emotional demands than their team, they are 40% more likely to cite excessive workloads and 4 in 10 stressed leaders have considered leaving their role. Not because they’re weak but because the system isn’t sustainable. Burnout isn’t weakness, it’s a system warning, not a personal failure.
Leadership survival strategies: Check in with yourself, ask:
- “When was the last time I felt rested and focused?” Early warning signs matter.
- Protect your energy and stop fixing everything.
- Schedule real recovery, you wouldn’t cancel a meeting with your CEO. Don’t cancel the one with yourself.
- Lean on others, leadership is not meant to be lonely. Find mentors, peers, and safe spaces to talk. Celebrate small wins, not every achievement has to be massive. Progress is still progress. Most importantly: burnout does not mean you’re not capable.
Even the most powerful leaders need rest before they can rise.
The monsters in modern workplace culture aren’t here to destroy us, they’re here to reveal what needs to change. When leaders show up with curiosity, clarity, and compassion, they don’t just survive the spooky season, they create cultures that thrive long after the ghosts, ghouls and cobwebs have gone home.
